Reports issued earlier this month suggested Porsche was on its way to develop a new compact SUV, the “Cajun” but a new report suggests the program may have been put on hold.
In a recent interview with Britain’s Autocar, newly appointed Porsche CEO Matthias Muller suggests the “Cajun” may not have the firm approval for production as was once reported. Although Muller didn’t say the vehicle is dead in the water, he noted it’s “on hold,” saying the company wants to reevaluate.
We’re hoping this isn’t the start of a power struggle between Stuttgart and Wolfsburg…
How Porsche’s model line would sync up with Audi and Volkswagen’s, has been the question since the VW Group made its move to acquire a majority stake in Porsche last year. The Audi Q5 platform would likely serve as the basis for the new SUV “Cajun,” which was mentioned by Volkswagen Group CEO Martin Winterkorn roughly two weeks ago. Porsche’s new CEO Matthias Muller, himself a transplant from VW, is said to be holding off on further development on any new models. It seems as if Muller is simply trying to establish some autonomy for the Porsche brand within the VW corporate empire.
“We have to clarify how we are to spread out our product program – below, above, left and right, and so on,” Muller told Autocar. “We will see. There are a lot of questions still to be answered, and we want to create a business case [for the vehicles]. Then it will be possible [to build them].”
