When Porsche switched from partnering with premium watch makers like IWC and took its watch making business in house under the “Porsche Design” line of watches, a lot of enthusiasts like myself were disappointed. These types of collaborations provided collectors with a superb Swiss watch along with unique piece of branded gear. This dual branding had been very successful over the years and still remained popular with other automotive manufacturers such as the Bentley -Breitling collaboration and the Ferrari -Panerai collaboration.
But Porsche decided to end those relationships years ago and create its own watch brand. And although the Porsche Design watches are stunningly beautiful, made from superb materials and built to the highest quality that you would expect from a brand such as Porsche – they never really caught on. Some of the reasons I feel for this is that they have little marketplace brand recognition for being ultra-luxurious, are extremely over priced, and difficult to find. Why would anyone other than a true Porsche enthusiast seek and purchase a Porsche Design over hundreds of other high-end watchmakers? These other watch brands offer buyers an easier purchase and warranty procedure through numerous retail outlets across the globe, plus tend to hold their value much better in the long run.
With the recent announcement of Porsche going back to collaborating with a brand such as Tag Heuer for a new chronograph, I’m happy to say, it’s finally a Porsche watch worth buying again!
From the release:
The TAG Heuer Carrera Porsche Chronograph
Carrera as an icon of a name has been associated with Porsche and TAG Heuer for generations – so it was a natural choice for the first creative product collaboration. A tribute to the heritage of two brands, the new chronograph offers a first glimpse at what they can achieve together and is a seamless blend of the Porsche and TAG Heuer universes, reflecting the excellence of both names without diluting the essence of either.
Porsche’s engraved inscription is visible on the bezel and the unmistakable font is also used for the indexes. The Porsche colours of red, black, and grey – which also recall historic Heuer models – are incorporated throughout the watch, and on clear display through the transparent cristal case back is the oscillating mass, which has been redesigned in affectionate tribute to Porsche’s celebrated steering wheel. It is printed with “Porsche” and “TAG Heuer”.
